Plot summary:
After hearing Jesus’ miraculous stories of the healing of diseased-stricken and demon-possessed from regions across Jordan, large crowds started following Jesus. He saw the crowds and commenced to preach to them the first part of his Sermon and Mount, the Beatitudes. Salt and Light-Jesus preaches that one must go out in the world and let one’s light shine before man that they may see your good deeds that thus likewise, turn and praise their father in heaven.
Adultery- Committing adultery is a crime, but Jesus also adds that those who even look at woman lustfully are guilty of adultery. It is better to gouge out the eye that led you to the crime than to have your whole body burn in the fires of hell.
Murder- Jesus re-iterates the crime of murdering another human will be brought to judgment, but also adds that those who are angry with their brother will also be brought to judgment. He emphasizes the act of reconciliation here.
Love for Enemies- “The idea of Love your neighbor and hate thy enemy”has been turned into “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
Divorce- One must not divorce for any reason other than if your wife has caused marital unfaithfulness. The woman you have divorced will become an adulteress and the men she marries will be guilty of the crime of adultery. Description
An Eye for an Eye- Jesus banishes this common thought of getting even by saying that if man strikes one person on the cheek, turn to him the other also.
Characters:
Jesus- In Christian faith, Jesus was known as the Messiah and the son of God. He was sent to earth by God himself to cleanse the world of its outrageous sin in exchange for his death.
Allusion:
“‘Well,’ said the Lieutenant, who had listened with amused interest to all this, and now waxing merry with his triple, ‘blessed are the peacemakers, especially the fighting peacemakers!’” In Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick, the Lieutenant alludes to the Jesus’ Sermons on the Mount with the statement “blessed are the peacemakers” which refers to the Beatitudes.
