DCQ Question for Rappaccini's Daughter:
Defend/Challenge/Qualify Question for “Rappaccini’s Daughter”
Dr. Rappaccini is characterized as a man who willingly sacrificed what was dear to him in the pursuit of knowledge/ (progress in science). Hawthorne refers to him as a man who “would sacrifice human life, his own among the rest, or whatever else was dearest to him, for the sake of adding so much as a grain of mustard-seed to the great heap of his accumulated knowledge.” On the contrary, Dr. Baglioni is an individual who selfishly risked someone’s life (Beatrice’s) in order to advance his own career in “a professional warfare of long continuance between him and Doctor Rappaccini, in which the latter was generally thought to have gained the advantage.”
Which of these two men comprises the greater evil (if any evil at all)? Using appropriate evidence (some of which must come from “Rappaccini’s Daughter”), defend your position on this issue.
Please bring your copy of Rappaccini's Daughter to class. Thanks
