Excalibur
Summary: After King Uther died, Merlin set up a test to see who would be the next heir to the throne to lead Britain to victory. Merlin’s test was to discover who could pull out Excalibur, the magical sword, from a stone. The true heir of Uther Pendragon would be the only one able to accomplish this extraordinary feat. Arthur was of course the chosen one to pull Excalibur out, which proved his royalty and right to rule and unite Great Britain.
Characters:
King Uther-the original king chosen by Merlin to lead Britain to victory
Merlin-the magician who oversaw the pulling of the sword from the stone
Arthur-the rightful heir of Uther Pendragon who was able to pull Excalibur out and thus became the next king of Britain
Allusion: In the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry is a first year at Hogwart’s who must determine which house he will reside in by using a magic sorting hat. He pulls out Gryffindor’s sword and is thus assigned to the house of Gryffindor. Only a true Gryffindor would have been able to pull the sword out, just like how only the true heir to the throne would have been able to pull Excalibur out of the stone. Harry pulls Gryffindor’s sword out of the sorting hat and is the “chosen one” to fight and overcome Voldemort’s evil power, similar to how King Arthur pulls Excalibur out of the stone and is chosen to lead Britain to victory in its darkest times. Harry is the only one able to battle Lord Voldemort and still survive, a sign that he is extremely special. Similarly, King Arthur is special in being chosen as Britain’s next king out of the millions who attempted Merlin’s test.
