a) Parable of the Prodigal Son (New Testament)
b) Summary:
In the bible, a father had one younger son that begged for wealth, then ran off and squandered it on material goods, while his older son remained faithfully at home and worked diligently for his father. When the younger son realized that he was wasting away his money, he journeyed back home to his father and brother. Upon his return, his father greeted him and was so overjoyed because he returned and decided to throw a celebration. As the preparations for the celebration were being carried out, the elder son walked back to his house, unaware of the return of his brother, to find his father showering his brother with meat and goods. Jealousy welled up inside him and he shouted at his father for lavishing his brother, the spoiled child, with gifts, while he, the diligent son, worked. His father simply replies that it is because his younger son was lost, and then he was found.
Characters:
father- gives younger son wealth
older brother- jealous of younger brother
younger brother- goes away, wastes money
c) Allusion:
In the novel, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Cyrus has two sons, Charles and Adam. Charles, the elder brother, truly loves his father, and works multiple jobs in order to buy his father a valuable knife. Adam, the younger brother, is indifferent towards his father, and does not seek the love that Charles tries so desperately to win. Charles receives no love from his father, even though he works tirelessly to please him. Adam, however, is indifferent, yet receives all of his father’s love; Charles finds this inequality infuriating and nearly murders Adam. Like the younger brother from the parable, Adam takes his half of the fortune, and leaves for California with a devious and calculating Cathy just as the younger brother in the parable left to spend his riches and have an adventure. Both Adam and the younger son receive unearned love and wealth from their fathers while their older brothers, Charles and the older brother, work to please their fathers, and fail.
