Summary:
Joseph is greatly favored by his father, Jacob, and thus is given a colorful coat from his father. The colorful coat is symbolized as love and affection from Jacob. Due to Jacob’s favoritism for Joseph, his other sons are jealous of their father’s affection and love for Joseph. Thus, Joseph’s brothers decide to make him disappear by kidnapping and selling him to the merchants. To make the story more realistic, they kill a baby goat and dip the colorful coat into its blood. When Joseph arrives in Egypt, he rises up through the ranks quickly though he has many temptations and setbacks. He has achieved and gone through so much because of his ability to interpret dreams. One day, the pharaoh asks Joseph to interpret his dreams which reveal the condition of seven years of plenty and seven years of famine in Egypt. By knowing what eventually will happen, Joseph is in charge of the food supplies and he orders to collect extra food supplies for the upcoming years of famine. When his brothers arrive in Egypt one day, he decides to play tricks with them. However, he reveals his true identity in the end and helps to bring all his family members to Egypt.

Allusions:
In The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, it is a story about a man named Edmond Dantes who is accused of treason by several rich men. The reason behind the false accusations is that the wealthy men are jealousy of Dantes’s wealth and successes. Because of the false accusations, Dantes is sent to jail and has lost his reputation. After he is managed to escape from prison and slowly rises to the top, he becomes more powerful than before and plans to get revenge on his enemies. The Count of Monte Cristo has some allusions from Joseph and the Coat because both Joseph and Edmond Dantes are betrayed and both have their dignity as human beings. Joseph has become a slave, losing his freedom and rights as a human being. As for Edmond Dantes, he has lost his respectable reputation and wealth. In addition, both of them have lost their power to control what they want. However, they rise up to the top and become more powerful than they did in the past. With more power, they can overcome their enemies and defeat them.
